A Journey of Grief - By Sophia Dang

Here is an artwork I created for the exhibition 'I AM LOVE' at The Goodspace Gallery in March 2025. I felt compelled to create an artwork expressing my raw thoughts and feelings of experiencing loss, death and grief. It has been an incredibly tumultuous and difficult journey navigating life since Wendy's passing, my dearest cousin whom I have grown up with over the last twenty years.

For those who may resonate with navigating through grief, I hope my artwork can provide you with some form of inner peace, solace and connection.

A Journey of Grief (2025) Digital art, printed on canvas

A story about grief – navigating a landscape that no longer bears your loved one. Where do you go from here? Or more importantly, where did they go?

Overwhelmed with deep sorrow and loneliness, overflowing with questions tugging at the strings of existentialism. Here, you venture on a journey to find them – searching near and far, anywhere and everywhere. A relentless pursuit to seek meaning, to make sense of it all in a now hollow world, devoid of any hope or purpose. You feel wounded...no longer carrying the same bright vibrancy you once embodied.

And yet, perhaps it is not about a desperate search for meaning, or an attempt to unravel the maze we call the ‘universe’ – one to which we may never find answers. What if, instead, a deep inner peace lies in knowing that your life was once illuminated by the presence of someone so dear to you?

Their spirit endures as a quiet, unwavering presence – smiling from above, proudly cheering you on. No matter the distance, such a bond can never be frayed.
